Bevan Springer Calls For Proactive Promotion Of Peace Through Tourism This World Tourism Day

Friday, September 27, 2024

New Jersey (September 26, 2024) – In honor of World Tourism Day on September 27, themed “Tourism and Peace” by the United Nations, Bevan Springer, President of Marketplace Excellence and the Caribbean Media Exchange, is highlighting the vital connection between tourism and peacebuilding, advocating for its active promotion in the Caribbean and beyond.

Springer emphasizes that tourism serves as the ultimate peace dividend, essential for rejuvenating regions recovering from conflict. When conflict subsides and peace is declared, borders open, allowing people to explore previously adversarial territories, which fosters healing and understanding. Visitors from different regions play a crucial role in reviving destinations heavily impacted by conflict.

The unique ability of tourism to revitalize economies and encourage cultural exchange is especially significant in areas once devastated by war. “We must focus more on resolving global conflicts. Once peace is achieved, the pent-up demand for travel can significantly increase visitor numbers to these regions.

Having provided counsel for various United Nations summits, Springer also urged for diplomatic efforts to alleviate tensions between the United States and Cuba. Although we have come close to reconciling the differences between these nations, there is still much work to be done. A collaborative approach between Washington and Havana, potentially led by some of our most skilled Caribbean diplomats, could restore peaceful relations and unlock new regional opportunities.

The Caribbean exemplifies how people from diverse backgrounds can coexist harmoniously, regardless of race, class, or creed. This spirit of unity is reflected in the region’s warm welcome to visitors from around the world, presenting a model of inclusivity that the world can learn from. Tourism reinforces these connections, fostering understanding and mutual respect between locals and travelers.
